We have been focused on helping our clients succeed and grow in an ever-changing market. We comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations and operate our business unit with all necessary environmental permits, approvals and operational controls. We wish to continue doing the same. So, to all the clients and business connections associated with Peakman Management, we have good news to share. We have received our formal renewal of the Canadian Green Building Council (CGBC or CaGBC) Membership recently. If you don’t know what it means, we will tell you everything about CGBC and the membership.
What is the Canadian Green Building Council?
The Canada Green Building Council is a national non-profit organization that focuses on advancing green building and sustainable community development practices in Canada. It is a broad-based inclusive coalition of representatives from different segments of the design and building industry formed to accelerate ecological ways to build and function. The CGBC is the license holder for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system in Canada and supports the WELL Building Standard and Green Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) in Canada. LEED rating system is available for virtually all building, community and home project types and it provides a framework to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. CGBC advocates for green building policies with all levels of Canadian governments and the private sector. As a result, thousands of commercial and government buildings, schools, community centres, historic structures, and even homes have been altered or newly constructed to green building standards. Not only this, but CGBC is also Canada’s only industry association that offers innovative green building solutions, education, and research that directly support various greenhouse gas reduction.
The CGBC has embarked upon a multi-year development project to introduce the next generation of LEED in Canada. Alongside, the CGBC has also launched GREEN UP – Canada’s Building Performance Program (formerly called Green Building Performance Initiative), a focused effort to develop an affordable and easily accessible tool for energy and environmental management for new and existing buildings. Both initiatives will enable a large-scale reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, energy savings, and other environmental benefits for all building types and communities across Canada.
History of CGBC
The CGBC was founded in 2002 by Kevin Hydes of Integral Group, Joe Van Belleghem, Jon Hobbs, formerly of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and Peter Busby of Perkins+Will Canada. Before this establishment, Canada participated in the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) through British Columbia’s membership in the USGBC’s Cascadia Chapter. Currently, CGBC is a member of the World Green Building Council.
Chapters of CGBC
Chapters are individuals, not companies, who would like to be involved in the green building community at the local level. Chapter members may be anyone interested in green buildings related to commercial, residential, or neighbourhoods and communities including emerging green builders. The CGBC works closely with a network of regional chapters across Canada to extend the green building market transformation to diverse regions and cities throughout the country. All these chapters function locally play a key role in advancing the vision and mission of the CGBC. The local chapters in Canada include:
- Atlantic
- Alberta
- British Columbia

- Saskatchewan
Peakman Management is associated with the Alberta chapter.
